14-Day Madagascar Itinerary

Day 1: Antananarivo – Andasibe
Leave the capital for Madagascar’s eastern highlands. Pause at Peyrieras Reptile Reserve to meet
chameleons, geckos and lemurs up close before reaching Andasibe, the country’s most accessible rainforest.
At dusk, join a night walk in VOI Community Reserve where Mouse Lemurs, tree frogs and nocturnal geckos
come to life.
Day 2: Andasibe – Mantadia National Park
Track the Indri, Madagascar’s largest lemur, through primary rainforest.
Their hunting call carries across the canopy – A sound you won’t hear anywhere else. Spot Bamboo Lemurs,
endemic birds, and rare orchids on guided trails, then enjoy the afternoon at leisure in the village or lodge.
Day 3: Vakona Reserve – Antananarivo
Cross the Vakona’s Lemur Island by canoe for intimate encounters with Sifakas and Brown Lemurs in a
natural setting. Explore the crocodile lake and vivarium before returning to the capital for the night.
Day 4: Antananarivo – Antsirabe
Drive through terraced rice fields and volcanic highlands to Antsirabe. This cool, colonial hill city is
Madagascar’s craft heartland. Watch artisans transform recycled aluminum, carve miniatures, and cut the
island’s gemstones by hand.
Day 5: Antsirabe – Ranomafana
Take a rickshaw tour of Antsirabe’s Thermal quarter and markets before heading south to Ambositra. Visit
Zafimaniry woodcarvers whose UNESCO’s recognized craft is unique to this region. Continue into the
mountains to Ranomafana National Park.
Day 6: Ranomafana National Park
Nestled in the heart of Madagascar’s eastern rainforest, Ranomafana village charms visitors with the misty
hills, tropical scenery, and peaceful atmosphere.
Explore one of Madagascar’s richest rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Search for the rare Golden
Bamboo Lemur, discovered here in 1986, alongside chameleons, tree frogs and medicinal plants found only
in this cloud forest.
Day 7: Ranomafana- Ambalavao – Tsaranoro Valley
Stop in Fianarantsoa’s historic Upper Town, then reach Ambalavao to see silk weaving and the making of
Antemoro paper, a craft using native plants and flowers inlays. At Anja Community Reserve, observe wilde
Ring Tailed Lemurs in a project run entirely by villagers. End the day in Tsaranoro Valley framed by granit
cliffs unlike anywhere else on the island.
Day 8: Tsaranoro Valley
Choose a trek to Mount Tsaranoro or to Mount Chameleon. This valley is sacred to the Betsileo and Bara
people, and its rock formations draw climbers and birdwatchers worldwide. Meet local communities and
take in views over the high plateau.
Day 9: Tsaranoro – Ranohira
Descend into the South as the landscape opens into savannah and sandstone. Pass through Bara cattle
country and watch the scenery’s shift toward the dramatic escarpment of Isalo.
Day 10: Isalo National Park
Walk through Madagascar’s “Grand Canyon”: deep canyons, natural pools and wind-sculpted rock
formations. Cool off in the Nymphs and Blue Pools, and look for Ring-Tailed Lemurs and endemic aloes
clinging to the cliffs.
Day 11: Ranohira – Ifaty
Head to the Mozambique Channel, passing spiny forest and towering baobabs. In Toliary, browse the shell
market before arriving in Ifaty, a quiet coastal village build on fishing and coral reefs.
Day 12 and 13: Ifaty Coast
Two days to slow down. Sail with Vezo fishermen in a traditional pirogue, snorkel over coral gardens, or
explore the Spiny Forest – an ecosystem found only in southwest Madagascar. From July to September,
humpback wales migrate offshore and can be spotted from the beach.
Day 14 : Ifaty – Toliary – Antananarivo
Fly back to the capital for your onward connection, bringing the journey full circle.
