What safety measures do your tours follow?

Quick answer

Our private tours follow practical, locally informed safety measures: licensed guides and experienced local drivers, inspected 4×4 or minibus transport with seat belts and first‑aid kits, park and ranger protocols for wildlife activities, accommodation checks, clear emergency procedures and reliable local communications. We plan realistic routes and pacing, adapt activities to fitness and age, and ask travellers to share medical details and hold comprehensive travel insurance.

Key points

  • Licensed Malagasy guides and experienced local drivers for every tour
  • Daily vehicle checks, seat belts and basic emergency equipment on board
  • Park rules, ranger guidance and specialist local guides for wildlife walks
  • First aid, clear emergency escalation and local hospital access planning
  • Flexible pacing, child-friendly arrangements on request and pre-trip medical disclosure

Operational safety on our tours

All tours are private and run by locally based staff. Fidele (licensed guide, national guide association member since 1986) and Finaritra manage planning and on-the-ground coordination; their experience from over 250 Madagascar tours shapes our safety approach. Before departure we confirm the route, daily driving times, accommodation details and any specialist guide needs so the itinerary remains realistic and safe.

Transport and driver procedures

  • Vehicles: we use 4x4s or minibuses depending on group size. Vehicles are inspected before trips and again daily when travelling long distances.
  • Equipment: each vehicle carries a first aid kit, tools and a spare tyre. Where mobile coverage is poor we use alternative reliable communications (mobile and satellite depending on area).
  • Driving practice: drivers are local and expererienced; we plan rest breaks and avoid unnecessary night driving on poorly lit or rough roads.
  • Seat belts and child safety: seat belts are fitted and must be used. Child seats can be arranged on request—please ask when you book.

Health, medical and food safety

Guides carry first aid supplies and know local clinic and hospital locations for each region. For remote areas we include an emergency escalation plan and faster access when necessary. We require guests to have comprehensive travel insurance and to disclose medical conditions, allergies or mobility limits at booking so we can adapt pacing and logistics.

We follow practical food and water hygiene standards at arranged restaurants and lodges; bottled water is commonly used. For vaccination and malaria guidance please consult your travel health clinic—see our health and vaccinations page for links and local context.

Wildlife, park and activity safety

In national parks and reserves we always follow park rules and local ranger instructions. For nocturnal walks, river crossings or steep trails we use specialist local guides where needed, keep group sizes manageable and brief visitors on safe distances, photography behaviour and minimal disturbance. Guides will adapt walks to fitness levels and may decline activities if conditions are unsafe.

Emergency procedures and local support

  • Local contacts: you will have direct contacts for your guide and our local office during the tour.
  • Escalation: our standard procedure moves from on-site first aid to local clinic referral, then to hospital transfer if required; we help coordinate ambulance or air transfer when necessary depending on location and condition.
  • Communication: we aim to maintain regular check-ins and can use satellite communication in areas with no mobile signal.

Traveller responsibilities (brief)

To keep everyone safe, please:

  • Tell us about medical conditions, allergies or mobility limits when booking.
  • Bring prescribed medication and travel insurance covering medical evacuation.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions, use seat belts and respect park rules.
  • Request child seats, slower walking paces or other adaptations at the time of booking.

Summary

We combine licensed guides, experienced local drivers, inspected vehicles, first aid and clear emergency plans with park protocols and flexible pacing. Practical precautions and upfront communication—including medical disclosure and travel insurance—are the core of our safety approach on every private tour.
